Em dash とは

Em dashとは、ダッシュのひとつ。
幅は en dashよりも広い。
"m"という文字の幅と同じだから、こう呼ばれるとか。

一般的なキーボードでは専用のキーはありません。
しかし、文字コードを用いて挿入することができます。
Unicodeでは、2014。あるいは、Alt + 0151。

もっとも使い道の多い句読点。
文脈によって、コンマ(commas)、括弧(parentheses)、コロン(colons)の代わりに使うことができます。

１）コンマの代わりとして用いる
　　読みやすさを強調する。ただし、通常は、コンマより強調される。
　　Em dash > Comma

２）括弧の代わりとして用いる
　　ただし、Em dashの方がよりくだけた感じを与える。また、より”割り込んだ”感じとなる。
　　そのため、注意を惹きたいときは、em dashを用いればよい。

３）コロンの代わりとして用いる
　　文の結論を強調したいとき。ただし、Em dashの方がコロンよりくだけた感じを与える。

The white sand, the warm water, the sparkling sun—this is what brought them to Hawaii.


４）em dashを2個続けて、単語の一部を省略する
　　単語の一部がわからない場合、あるいは意図的に隠す場合、どちらでも用いることができる。

Mr. J—— testified that the defendant yelled, “Die, a——,” before pulling the trigger.
